Abstract

Filaments, threads, films, &c. of cellulose esters or ethers, for example, cellulose acetate of 52 to 62,5 per cent acetyl content, are softened with media comprising methylene ethylene ether, and subjected to stretching operations. The solvent may be employed alone or in conjunction with other solvents when it is applied in limited quantities, for example, by spraying, or by passing the filaments over devices supplied with limited quantities of solvent, but preferably is diluted with non-solvents, of which water is the most advantageous. As in the process of Specification 371,461, the filaments may be stretched in warp formation. In examples, (1) cellulose acetate filaments in hank form are softened in a 31-33 per cent aqueous solution of methylene ethylene ether and stretched, and (2) filaments of cellulose acetate of acetyl value of 57-58 per cent are soaked in 33-35 per cent aqueous methylene ethylene ether and stretched.
