Abstract
393,839. Motor-vehicle screw-and-nut steering-gear. HOLROYD & CO., Ltd., J. and GARTSIDE, V., Harbour Lane, Milnrow, near Rochdale. Oct. 28, 1932, No. 30229. [Class 79 (v).]' Screw-and-nut steering-gear which can be adjusted for wear by a single means operated from outside the gear casing comprises a screw 3, Figs. 1-3, a nut 8 having a groove 9 with tapered sides 11, 12, a slide block or blocks 13 fitting the sides of the groove, a conical pivot pin or pins 15 engaging a conical hole in the block or blocks and fixed to the rocker arm or arms 7 on the rocker shaft 6 which is to be operated, and means such as a set screw 16 for displacing the arm, pin, block and nut in a lateral direction to take up wear. When the set screw is tightened all the parts are moved laterally until all wear is taken up and the nut bears against a face 10 of the gear casing 1. If wear is to be taken up between the nut and the screw, the latter is provided with a V-thread and the nut is formed in two parts having a tongue-andgroove engagement, so that when the set screw 16 is adjusted the two parts of the nut are brought together on to the screw. Instead of the set screw 16 for adjustment purposes a wedge may be employed having one face bearing against the arm 7 and an inclined face bearing against a corresponding face on the casing, the wedge being adjusted endwise by screws. In the construction shown in Fig. 7, the screw 37 is engaged by a two-part nut 38 having grooves 41 for slidable blocks 42 engaged by conical pins 43 carried by arms 36, 34, the arm 36 being fixed on the rocker shaft 32 and the arm 34 being slidably but non-rotatably connected thereto by splines 35. In order to take up wear, a nut 45 screwed on the shaft 32 bears against a boss 33 of the arm 34 and when this nut is tightened all the parts are drawn together by the arms 34, 36 and wear is taken up.
