Abstract
392,341. Petrol-electric locomotives. SULZER FR’RES SOC. ANON., Winterthur, Switzerland. April 6, 1932, No. 9900. Convention date, April 23, 1931. [Class 79 (iii).] In a Diesel-electric or like rail vehicle, the internal-combustion engine installation and the electrical apparatus are arranged in separate compartments with the air supply passing from the electrical compartment to that containing the engine. The locomotive shown in Fig. 1 is furnished with a Diesel engine 2 in a compartment 9 driving an electric generator 3 situated, together with an exciter 4, other electrical apparatus 13 and a vacuum brake pump or compressor 12, in a compartment 10. Coolers 14 for the cooling medium are arranged in front and rear driver's compartments 5, 6. Air flows from the compartment 10 to the compartment 9 due to the movement of the vehicle in one direction or to the action of exhaust fans in the roof. In a modification, a central compartment contains two internal combustion engines, compartments at each end thereof containing the electrical equipment in addition to cooling apparatus, air flowing or being pumped from these compartments to the central compartment, thence passing to the atmosphere. The compartments may be formed by longitudinal instead of transverse partitions. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also an arrangement, Fig. 2 (Cancelled), wherein two Diesel-electric generating sets 2, 3, 4 and a pump or compressor 12 are located in a central compartment 9, a driver's cabin 5 at each end being separated therefrom by compartments 15 containing cooling apparatus 14 whilst a small compartment 18 contains electrical apparatus. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
