Abstract
391,529. Driving-gear ; four-stroke engines. FINLAY, R. N., 66, Eglantine Avenue, Belfast. Dec. 8, 1931, Nos. 33989/31 and 24053/32. [Class 7 (ii).] A cam driving-gear consists of two concentric cylinders 6, 8 with wave-like ridges 5, 7, these ridges being engaged by rollers 3 carried by piston-rods 1. The rods are hollow, and spring cushions are provided for the mounts which carry the rollers ; these are in the form of truncated cones, whose imaginary apices lie on the axis of the cylinders. The rollers are reciprocated by pistons working in doubleacting two-stroke cylinders, or (as shown) by pistons in pairs of four-stroke cycle cylinders arranged in tandem ; the power cylinders have their axes arranged around a central cam shaft. The concentric cylinders 6, 8 drive the cam shaft 11, which is adjustable to vary the timing of the valves 23. These act both as air inlet and exhaust valves when the engine works with compression ignition. The valves are arranged to retain in the cylinder for each succeeding cycle some of the products at low load. The contour of the ridges is designed to give two or more complete cycles for each revolution of the cylinders 6, 8. In a modification, a water-cooled explosion engine is described. Pipes.-A combined air-admission and exhaust pipe 39 for each cylinder end has a deflector surface 40 for diverting air towards the valve 23, and a similar surface 41 to guide the products into a manifold 25. Pistons, cooling.-The hollow piston-rods 1 allow a flow of cooling-air through the pistons, this air being collected by scoops 38 on the ends of the cylinders 6, 8. Pipes 33 form outlets for this cooling-air. In the explosion engine water-cooling is used for the pistons.
