390,708. Gear-cutting. SCHMITT, W., 5, Bismarckstrasse, Ettlingen, Baden, Germany. Aug. 23, 1932, No. 23628. Convention date, Aug. 29, 1931. [Class 83 (iii).] In a gear-generating machine of the type wherein a pinion cutter is reciprocated axially of the blank, the latter being withdrawn from the tool on the return strokes, the lateral feed slide 7, which is adjustable according to the diameter of the blank to be cut, carries the mechanism for reciprocating the cutter spindle 17. This mechanism is operated from a main shaft 9 through bevel gearing 10 and consists of an adjustable crank disc 12, link 14 and rocking, lever 15, the latter being provided with a toothed segment 16 engaging a rack on the cutter spindle. In order to change the axial position of the limits of the tool stroke, bolts 19 connecting the segment to the lever 15 are slacked off and the segment adjusted by means of worm gearing 21. For altering the position of the cutter spindle in accordance with the diameter of the blank the whole mechanism is adjusted along the driving shaft 9. These adjustments do not disturb the relative positions of the crank disc 12 and the cam 18 for withdrawing the work during the return movements of the cutter.
