Abstract
Tantalum carbide and tungsten carbide are prepared by firing an intimate mixture of the powdered metals and carbon in a closed graphite tube in a hydrogen furnace at about 1550-1600 DEG C. Specification 319,698, [Class 1 (ii), Inorganic compounds, other than &c.], is referred to.ALSO:A hard composition comprises tantalum carbide, a carbide of a metal of the sixth group of the periodic classification of the elements, for example tungsten carbide, and a metal of the iron group. Preferably the carbides are present in equal proportions by weight. Tantalum carbide is prepared by firing an intimate mixture of the powdered metal and carbon in a closed graphite tube in a hydrogen furnace at about 1550 DEG -1600 DEG C., and tungsten carbide may be prepared in a similar manner. The carbides are mixed with the powdered binding metal, pressed into shape, and sintered at 1400 DEG C. The product may be used as a tool bit which may be secured to a supporting shank, for example, by copper brazing.
