Abstract

389,251. Expanding pulleys. CANNON, J. J., Orson Street Works, North Evington, Leicester. Feb. 11, 1932, No. 4071. [Class 80 (ii).] An expanding pulley comprises tread members 9 adapted to be wedged apart by interpenetrating cones 1, 2. The cone 1 preferably fixed at 6, Fig. 4, to a shaft 5 drives by the interpenetrating parts the loose cone 2 which is moved axially to vary the pulley diameter. The tread members or segments 9 are drawn inwards against the cones preferably by a single spring 12 passing round through them all. Each segment is positively connected to the pulley body as by a pin 15,. Fig. 4, secured at 17 to the segment and projecting permanently into a slot 16 in a cone face. The segments 9 are shaped to fit the cones and preferably are in mutual contact in the position of least diameter. Externally, the segments are shaped to suit a flat belt or a rope, and the composite tread may be circular in the half expanded position.
