[Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii).] In a furnace wall comprising an external metallic framework 10 which supports in spaced relation thereto a wall or lining of refractory blocks 16, each of the blocks is retained against displacement inwardly from the wall but can be removed outwardly independently of the other blocks. In the construction shown each block is supported on a bracket 15 hooked on to a cross member 11 of the framework, the bracket having an horizontal portion 15a terminating in a flange 15c and an upwardly extending lug 15b. The lower face of the block is shaped to fit over the lug 15b, and the upper face has an upward extension 16c which takes behind the flange 15c. The blocks are backed by a thin coating of plastic material 17 and a layer 18 of heatinsulating material. After the backing has been removed any block can be taken out by tilting it as indicated in broken lines. In a modification the horizontal portion of the bracket has an upwardly bent end which engages in a recess in the lower or rear face of the block. With this construction the extension 16c contacts with the depending portion of the superjacent block. In a further modification, Fig. 5, the blocks are supported by transverse members 11<1>, which are bolted to the uprights 10, and inward movement of a block is prevented by the shape of the member 11<1> and by a locking member 20, which engages the member 11<1> and a recess in the upper face of the block. The block is freed by sliding the locking member over an adjacent block. The flange 20a of the locking member may extend upwards sufficiently to engage a recess in the lower face of the superjacent block. Expansion spaces left between the blocks are filled with a compressible refractory material.
