Abstract
388,450. Airships. WAAP, F., 18, Eisenstuckstrasse, Dresden, Germany. Sept. 7,1931, No. 25131. [Class 4.] An airship, shown in side and front view in Figs. 1 and 3, is broadest at the front end and tapers in convex curves towards the rear, where a promenade deck 20, elevators 19 and rudders 13 are provided. Lateral surfaces 4 giving aerodynamic support extend along the airship from keels 24 their arched surfaces merging at the front end into a central arched surface 11 extending up to a curved upper deck 3. The surfaces 4 may have two or more steps such as are shown in Fig. 8. Tiltable engines 14 and propellers are mounted on the forward edge of the deck 3 and beneath the surfaces 4 on suspended platforms 21, and in some cases also immediately beneath the surfaces 4 as shown at 26, Fig. 5. Main gas chambers 6 are provided in the central part of the airship and subsidiary chambers 5, 7 in the lateral portions. Rows of cabins with windows are arranged along the edges of the parts 4 and lower cabins with spaces 8 for freight &c. are provided in the keels which are watertight and compartmented to act as floats. A control cabin 12 is provided at the front or two cabins are formed in the lateral surfaces at 10. The rudders 13 dip into the water when the airship is afloat and act as water rudders.
