Abstract
387,366. Gyroscopic apparatus. MOSS, D. G. K., 33, Selby Road, Anerley, London. July 28, 1931, No. 21543. [Class 97 (iii).] All transverse members of the gimbal frame and gyro wheel mounting which under temperature variations are liable to affect the running of the gyro wheel are made of the same metal, not being that of the gyro wheel itself or of metals having substantially the same temperature coefficient. Fig. 2 shows a gyro turn indicator for aircraft in which the gyro wheel a is pivoted between the longitudinal members b of a gimbal having transverse members c pivoted externally of the upstanding horns el of a U-shaped frame e. The latter carries an air jet d for driving the gyro a and is secured by a screwed in socket k to a casing j having a dial plate g provided with a bubble level m. The front end e<1> of the frame e is shouldered at e2 to form a stop to limit the precession. A pointer f passing through an arcuate slot f<1> in the plate g is fixed to one transverse member c and two dashpots l and a return spring h are provided. In order to effect temperature compensation the transverse members c are made of steel and the brass gyro wheel a is mounted on a steel spindle q, having coned ends q<1> which are arranged within balls r carried in an adjustable steel ball cup s. The mounting of the gimbal in the frame e may be similarly compensated by making the longitudinal members b and the frame e of the same metal, or of metals having substantially the same temperature coefficient. Specification 2120/13, [Class 97 (iii), Thermometers &c.], is referred to.
