Abstract

387,199. Theatrical appliances. MESSMORE, G. H., 404, West 27th Street, New York, U.S.A. May 18, 1932, No. 14154. Convention date, July 24, 1931. [Class 132 (i).] In a device for stage purposes simulating a dinosaur or other animal, and worked by one or more operators concealed inside, the neck is formed of flexible material 16, Figs. 4 and 5, covering substantially transverse ribs 17 and is traversed by a shaft 20 connected at one end to the head 14 and universally pivoted and counterweighted at the other end so as to provide lateral and vertical movements of the head. Simulation of the muscular action of the neck is obtained by connecting the ribs 17 through links 45 to arms 44 on a sleeve 35 which encloses the shaft 20 and is turned by a hand-wheel 43. The links 45 have projections 47 which bear on the sides on the ribs and distort them. Intermediate flexion of the neck is provided by forming the shaft 20 in universally jointed sections and mounting pulleys 29, 32 on the joint pins. Operating cords 30, 33 are wound round these pulleys and adjusted as required. In the case of a sectional shaft, the rotary sleeve 35 is also made in sections connected by flexible transmission cable. The lower jaw 18 is pivoted and operated to open and close the mouth by cords 52 connected to arms 51 on the pivot pin.
