Abstract
A road, pavement, or the like is formed by applying to a layer of rolled dry road metal, or a layer of rolled tar macadam, a binding material in the form of a mortar consisting of a stabilized bituminous emulsion and a fine filling material, excluding such materials as cement, lime, plaster of Paris or the like, such mortar being applied in such a state of fluidity as will enable it to penetrate between the road material and completely fill the vods. The penetrative mortar may consist of 650 parts of calcareous sand, 60 parts of calcareous filler consisting of an impalpable stone powder, 0.2 parts of sodium oxalate to stabilize the emulsion, water, and 100 parts of commercial bituminous emulsion. After application of the mortar, a second layer of road material may be applied and rolled, followed by the application of further binding material. The road may be surfaced with a mortar consisting of 500 parts of calcareous sand, 40 parts of stone powder, 0.2 parts of sodium oxalate, 370 parts of gravel, 60 parts of water, and 100 parts of commercial bituminous emulsion.
