[Class 30.] The clamping- plate 10 of a safety razor is pivotally carried on a stem 16 slidable in a handle sleeve 14 integral with the guard 11 and is shifted into an extended position, Fig. 2, wherein the slotted blade 32 can be passed over it, by rotation of a knurled end-knob 23 secured to a tube 18 having a helical slot 20 in which rides a spring-pressed pin 17 carried by the stem 16 and guided either in a slot 21 in a rolled-up tube 19 fixed in the handle sleeve by an integral pin 22, or in a similar groove in the handle sleeve itself. The upper part 26 of the guide slot 21 is inclined so that the clamping-plate is also initially turned about the axis of the stem, its edges riding over the bevelled sides of a blade-locating rib 12 on the guard. The clamping-plate is unbalanced to cause it to tilt automatically into the position shown in Fig. 2. Either the sleeve 14 or the stem 16 has a groove 31 accommodating grease or an oil-impregnated felt washer. The rib-accommodating recess 30 in the clamping-plate is extended at 29 to its ends so that the plate may lie nearer to the guard. The transversely flexed blades may be single- or double-edged with cut-away corners and the guard may be toothed on one or both sides. Single-edged blades, when used, are of less than normal width and unsymmetrical longitudinally. A washer 25 spaces the tube-engaging shank 24 of the knob 23 from the sleeve 14. The razor head may be inclined to the handle.
