Abstract
Photographic silver halide emulsions are sensitized to blue-green, green and yellow by the use of carbocyanines, isocyanines, pseudocyanines and styryl compounds containing at least one nucleus <FORM:0386903/IV/1> in which R is an alkyl group and X is halogen, perchlorate, alkylosulphate or p - toluene sulphonate. The preparation of the several classes of dyes is described. (1) The carbocyanines are prepared by heating 2-methylthiazole ethiodide with acetic anhydride and trialkyl orthoformic ester and precipitating the dye with ether; (2) 1 : 1<1>-diethylthioisocyanine iodide is prepared by heating 2-methylthiazole ethiodide with quinoline ethiodide and adding sodium ethylate, the dye being precipitated with ether; (3) the pseudocyanines are formed by heating 2-methylthiazole ethiodine with 2-iodoquinoline and adding sodium ethylate; (4) 4-dimethylaminostyryl-2-thiazole-N-ethyl-iodide is formed by boiling 2-methylthiazole ethiodide and p - dimethylaminobenzaldehyde in alcohol with the addition of a few drops of pyridine and precipitating the dye with ether.
