Abstract
385,601. Jib cranes. FARNSWORTH, A. W. Devonshire Club, St. James's Street, London. March 26, 1931, Nos. 9255 and 17823. [Class 78 (iv).] A safe-load indicator, or warning or cut-out device for luffing cranes, comprises a bell-crank or like angle lever of relatively small dimensions pivoted on the jib, one arm of the lever being subject to a force due to the load, acting with a smaller leverage as the jib is raised, and the other arm being connected with the indicator or other safety device. A correcting device may be employed to move the indicator scale as the jib is luffed. As shown in Fig. 1, the head-sheave B is carried on the short arms 2 of a pair of bell-crank levers pivoted on the jib at 6, the long arms 4 of the levers bear on springs 7. The motion of the lever is transmitted by a member 10 to a pointer moving over a scale marked " safe " and " danger." The levers are arranged so that the effective radius of the short arms 2 is very small when the jib is nearly vertical, but the arms 2 are long enough to accommodate the bearings for the pins 1, 6. In a modification, Fig. 3, the load-sheave D is supported in a bight of the rope C, which is anchored at 1 to the bell-crank lever 2, 4. The indicator may be connected to a gong or buzzer. A correcting device (not claimed), which may be used with the invention, comprises a scale 13, Fig. 5, marked " safe " and " danger " pivoted on the jib and moved by a cam 22 also pivoted on the jib and connected with the base F by a link 25, or 251.
