Abstract

385,275. Steering trailer vehicles ; road trains ; vehicle couplings. FIAT SOC. ANON., 250, Via Nizza, Turin, Italy. March 16, 1931, No. 8099. Convention date, March 15, 1930. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Classes 79 (iii) and 79 (v).] Steering-gear for trailers capable of travelling in either direction and having two steering undercarriages is characterized in that, for the purpose of transmitting steering action from a front undercarriage to a rear undercarriage and vice versa, each of the undercarriages is provided with a cam operatively connected to the other undercarriage. In the construction shown each undercarriage is connected to the vehicle frame by a pivot 9 and carries a steering arm 8 having a pin 7 working in a slot 5 in a drawbar member 2 which is pivoted at 4 to the frame. Each undercarriage also carries a cam 10 adapted to be engaged by rollers 12, 14 on three-armed levers 16, 18 which are connected together by a pin 20 and are connected by rods 26, 28 to the other undercarriage so as to steer it when required. The pin 20 is carried by a slidable rod 32 which may be moved axially bv means of a hand-wheel 34 and screw. When the left-hand undercarriage of Figs. 1 and 2 is the leading one, the hand-wheel 34<1> at the other end is operated so as to sponding pin 20<1> and withdraw 141 from the cam 10<1> so that m rear undercarriage do not affect but the movements of the leading undercarriage are transmitted to the rear one in a manner depending on the shape of the cam 10. The angular movement of the leading undercarriage is less than that of the drawbar due to the disposition of the pivots 4, 9 relative to the pin 7. The drawbar member 2 is connected by a horizontal pivot 3 to the usual front part 1 which has a draw spring and a spring for the automatic brake. In making up a read train the part 1 of one drawbar is connected to the part 2 of the preceding vehicle by means of a fork member pivoted to the part 2 on the pivot 3.
