Abstract
In the decomposition of beryl with ammonium fluoride, reaction is effected in a continuous manner, for example in a rotary furnace at 500 DEG C., using vapours of ammonium fluoride, and the silicon fluoride evolved is treated with gaseous ammonia in a chamber cooled to 150 DEG C., and the solid compound SiF4.2NH3 deposited together with excess ammonium fluoride. The mixed solids are passed into water and treated with excess ammonia to recover ammonium fluoride for re-use and give a residue of pure silica. The mixture of beryllium and aluminium fluorides formed is leached with water to remove beryllium fluoride, and the residue treated with sulphuric acid and silica to liberate silicon fluoride which is added to that produced in the furnace operation and converted to ammonium fluoride, and yield aluminium sulphate. The neutral ammonium fluoride is heated to give the acid fluoride, the vapour of which is used in the process, and ammonia which serves for the formation and subsequent decomposition of the compound SiF4.2NH3.
