Abstract

384,680. Paper-folding apparatus. HOE & CO., Ltd., R., 109, Borough Road, London.-(Assignees of Tomlin, J. R. ; 910, East 138th Street, New York, U.S.A.) June 5, 1931, No. 21096/32. Convention date, Nov. 3, 1930. Divided on 386,313. [Class 100 (ii).] In paper-folding apparatus for printing- machines, of the type in which blades 73 on a rotary cylinder 29 tuck the paper between rollers 136, 137, the rollers and their driving mechanism are supported by a rigid frame 146 which is detachably mounted in the machine whereby the rollers and their driving mechanism can be removed or replaced in the machine as a unit. The frame 146 is secured by bolts to brackets on the main frame. A gear 53 on the cylinder 29 drives, through a gear train 54, 171, 173, intermeshing gears 174, 175 which respectively engage gears 176, 175<1> on the shafts of the folding rollers 136, 137. Levers 140, 141 pivoted on the shafts 142, 143 of the gears 174, 175 carry the rollers 136, 137, and their lower ends 152 are forked to engage a transverse shaft 149 at each end of the apparatus. Bushings 154 slidable in bearings 150 on the frame 146 are threaded internally to engage corresponding threads 156 on the rod 149 and are normally locked against rotation by spring- pressed blades 165 engaging notches 164 in collars 153 bearing against the levers 140, 142. Collars 155 pressed apart by a helical spring 158 engage the opposite faces of the levers so that by turning the shaft 149, the bushings 154 can be moved towards or away from one another and the distance apart of the rollers 136, 137 adjusted, the spring 158 also permitting the rollers to move apart when the blade 73 tucks a sheet between them. Simultaneous adjustment of both ends of the rollers 136, 137 can be effected by a shaft 159 coupling the shafts 149 together by gearing 161, 163. Independent adjustment of each end of either roller is obtained by releasing the corresponding catch 165 and rotating the bushing 154.
