Abstract

384,633. Stabilizing ships. GES. FœR ELEKTRISCHE APPARATE, 44, Wilhelm von Siemensstrasse, Marienfelde, Berlin. Feb. 24, 1931, No. 5727. Convention date, Feb. 24, 1930. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Addition to 357,138. [Class 113 (i).] In arrangements for damping the rolling or pitching of ships in which carriages are moved athwart ship or longitudinally of the ship out of phase with the rolling or pitching motion, the motors driving the carriages are controlled simultaneously by means operated from the angle of roll indicator whilst an independent control for each motor is provided to correct uneven movements of the carriages caused by list &c. The movements of the angle of roll indicator 11 are transferred by the motor 12 through the gear shown to the contact arm 2. The movements are also passed by the bevel wheel 16 to the device for producing a lag comprising a spring 45, Fig. 2, the strength of which is regulated by hydraulic damping- cylinders 49, 50 connected by tube 53 provided with the throttle valve 54. The output from the lag device is passed by the gearing shown to the differential 10 and are subsequently combined with the movements directly passed from the angle of roll indicator. The control arm 2 is electrically connected to all the carriage motors and moves across the resistances 4, 5 connected to the mains. The exciting winding 21 of the motor is inserted between the earthed and the positive leads in series with the resistance 22 which is adjusted to correct for the frictional resistance of the individual carriages. The resistance 23 is in circuit with the armatures 24<1>, 25<1> of relays 24, 25. The movements of the individual carriage motors are transferred to the electric motor 29 and thence through the lag device 30 similar to the lag device 17 to bevel wheels 21, 32. Reciprocating movements are thus transmitted to a switch disc 34 in permanent connection with the positive main through the contact 35. Further contacts 36, 37 rest on nonconducting parts of the switch disc and are connected to auxiliary contacts 40, 41, the other members 40<1>, 41<1> of the pair being connected to the relays 24, 25, associated with the armatures 24<1>, 25<1>. In the event of one-sided movements of the carriages caused for example by a list, the switch disc 34 contacts with either the pair of contacts 35, 36, or 36, 37 and with the closure of the contact pairs 40, 40<1> or 41, 41<1> operates the relays 24, 25 to modify the field currents until the movements of the carriages becomes again uniform relative to the fore-and-aft line of the ship.
