Abstract

384,549. Changing signs. LIPSKI, E. VON DER LIPPE-, 11, R. Street, Washington, U.S.A. May 11, 1932, No. 13598. [Class 3 (i).] Two sets of independent display panels 1 .. 7 are provided side by side in a casing 14, the panels in each set moving intermittently in a closed circuit to bring each in turn into view, and to form a combined picture at an opening 12, and moving apart from one another after display. The mechanism for advancing the panels comprises a chain 15 driven from a shaft 21 and moving over sprocket wheels 16. The chain 15 carries pushers 18, 19 which engage a pin 20 at the middle of each panel. The wheels 16 are located so that the pushers 18 abut against the pins 20 only to transfer the panels laterally, and the pushers 19 have fingers 23 which reach to the pins 20 and push the panels forward and backward. Fig. 8 shows the construction of the pushers 19, the fingers 23 being pivoted against spring pressure which is strong enough to push the panels forward till opposed by abutment against the casing 14, when the finger 23 is pressed back and held by a catch 27. This catch is released by studs 29 on the casing immediately before the pusher reaches the parallel pack of panels which are to be moved transversely. The panels contain triangular prisms 10 bearing composite pictures on their homologous faces, and rotated simultaneously and intermittently by a reciprocating bar 31, Fig. 5, carrying ratchet teeth 32 which engage pins 33 projecting from the prisms 10. The bar 31 is moved in one direction by a tappet wheel engaging an arm 36 on the bar 31, and is retracted by a spring 34. The side openings 14a of the casing may have fixed display matter, or may show composite pictures on triangular prisms actuated by a tappet wheel 39. The sign may be illuminated by changing coloured lights. In a modification the panels are carried by intermittently moved endless chains by links engaging central pivots on the panels. The pivots travel in a closed slot, and other closed slots engage pins on the panels to reverse them for display at each end of the casing, a switch being provided at the cross-overs to prevent the pins taking the wrong track. The triangular prisms in the panels are rotated by mutilated gearing disposed in the path of travel reciprocating a notched bar or a rack engaging pins or gear wheels respectively on the prisms.
