Abstract
384,536. Stuffing - box substitutes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Emmet, W. L. ; 48, Washington Avenue, Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) April 22, 1932, No. 11618. Convention date, April 22, 1931. [Class 122 (v).] A sealing ring 13 carried by a flexible diaphragm 27 secured to the casing 23, is pressed by springs 15 against a collar 7 secured to the shaft ; sealing liquid being supplied from a chamber 34 through flexible pipes 36 to the bearing faces. Annular and radial grooves 10, 11, the latter having bevelled entrance edges 12, are provided in the bearing face of the collar 7. Drainage from chambers 31, 32 may be pumped back to the supply chamber 34. The chamber 31 may communicate through a clearance 33 with the vacuum chamber of the machine or, in the case of a mercury turbine, may be supplied with gas low in oxygen content and slightly above atmospheric pressure. The diaphragm is of rubber or laminated metal plates and the members 7, 13 of stainless steel and wood respectively.
