Abstract
383,889. Cathode-ray tubes. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Marconi House, Strand, London.- (Assignees of Zworykin, V. K.; 416, Warwick Road, Haddonfield, and Batchelor, J. C. ; Edgewater Park, both in New Jersey, U.S.A.) May 11, 1932, No. 13623. Convention date, June 30, 1931. [Class 39 (i).] Parts of the structure of cathode-ray tubes are made non-reflective to light emitted by other parts during the operation of the tube. In a sealed glass tube with an " electron gun " 12 producing the cathode-ray 13, with a rayfocusing anode constituted by a silver coating 15 on the wall 10 and with a fluorescent screen 11, the gun 12 and wall 10 with its coating 15 are made non-reflective to light from the screen 11. The contrast between light and dark parts of a television image on the screen 11 is thus increased by the elimination of the luminous background normally produced by reflected light. The coating 15 and the gun 12 may be coated with carbon using a water colloidal solution and evacuating the tube at 500‹ C. Alternatively, the silver coating may be coated with a black layer of silver sulphide or selenide by treatment with hydrogen sulphide or selenide gas or with a solution of selenium in carbon disulphide. Tellurium may replace the selenium ; silver telluride may also be formed by treating the silver with tellurium vapour.
