Abstract

383,703. Well-drilling apparatus. CUTHILL, J., Glencoin, Bramhall, and OIL WELL ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., Cheadle Heath, Stockport, both in Cheshire. Sept. 30, 1931, No. 27256. [Class 85.] A rotary well - drilling apparatus has a hydraulic or other fluid-pressure feeding device fitted to the rotary table to rotate therewith and pressure fluid for actuating said device is supplied through the drill stem. As shown, a drive bushing 3a, fitted to the rotary table 1, forms part of a hydraulic &c. cylinder 3 which may be built of a variable number of longitudinal sections, some of which may be below the table. A piston 22 within the cylinder has a polished lower rod 7 for connection to the drill stem, and an upper square or splined rod 15 by which the drill is rotated from the table through the upper cylinder cover 10. A ring 16, rotatable on the cover 10, has eyes 19 for connection of holding down means. The upper end of the rod 15 is secured to the body 39 of a swivel, the inner member 51 of which is secured to a goose-neck 49 for supply of mud-flush &c. to the drill. Within the rod 15 pass pipes 30, 31, connected below to ports 26, 27, opening below and above the piston, the pipes terminating above in a plug 57, rotatable in the goose-neck 49 and provided with passages for connection of the pipes 30, 31 to fluid supply connections 66, 69, respectively ; fluid is supplied to and exhausted from the pipes 66, 69 through a four-way valve 36, and the pipe 66 has a gauge 73, indicating the weight suspended on the piston. Fluid supply means to the upper side of the piston are omitted when it is not desired to apply downward pressure.
