Abstract
383,590. Aircraft control gear. ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH AIRCRAFT, Ltd., SIR W. G. and LLOYD, J., Whitley, near Coventry. July 8, 1932, No. 19382. [Class 4.] An aircraft control surface moved by a servoflap mounted thereon and connected to the actuating means, is connected also to the actuating means through initially stressed resilient devices so that for small movements the control surface is positively operated with substantially no servo effect. A rudder 3 having a balancing portion (not shown) extending forwardly of its pivot 4 has a servo-flap 5 at its rear edge connected by crossed rods 9 to levers 10 connected by cables to a rudder bar 13. The levers 10 are connected directly to the rudder by rods 15 having telescopic portions 16 containing initially stressed springs so that for small displacements of the rudder it is positively moved with little action on the flap 5. Larger displacements involve further compression of one or other of the springs and consequent movement of the servo-flap 5. The rudder bar pivot may be provided with a friction clamping device 22 to hold it in set position against the pull of the resilient device 16.
