Abstract
383,286. Converting. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. July 31, 1931, No. 21953. Convention date, July 31, 1930. [Class 38 (ii).] In an electrical oscillation generator of the kind comprising a continuously charged condenser 6, Fig. 1, connected across the electrodes of glow discharge tube 5 in circuit with a battery B and resistance 11, the discharge is prevented from changing its position, and thus' varying the internal resistance of the tube, by the use of excessively small (" point size") electrodes. Fig. 2 shows one arrangement in' which both electrodes of a glow discharge tube' are carried by the same pinch from one end of the tube and Fig. 3 shows another arrangement in which the electrodes are carried by oppositely disposed pinches. In each case the electrode wires 3, 4 are covered with insulating material 7, 8, e.g. glass, quartz or kaolin, with only the extreme points 9, 10 projecting. The electrodes may be coated with electronically active materials such as alkaline-earth metals, alkali metals, thorium, uranium or radioactive materials or with suitable oxides or oxide mixtures. Electrodes of nickel coated with mixtures of alkaline-earth metals and amphoteric oxides, such as alumina, zinc oxide, chromic oxide or zirconium oxide, are specially suitable. The filling may be a rare or other inert gas or a metal vapour.
