Abstract
An electrode subject to destructive arcing in operation comprises a porous body of a metal of high melting point in the pores of which is embedded a metal of high thermal and electrical conductivity, amounting to at least 25 per cent of the electrode material. Preferably lightly-pounded tungsten powder is sintered in vacuo and the interstices remaining in the body are filled with the other metal which may be copper, silver, or a nobler metal. Where silver is used as the filling the tungsten powder is superficially carbonized by heating carbon present in the vacuum furnace, the body then being soldered to its carrier. In the case of copper, the body is cast on to its carrier in vacuo in the manufacture thereof. The percentage of filling may be as high as 50 and is determined by the pressure applied to the powder during sintering and by the sintering temperature.
