Abstract
a - Phenylethylene - a b - dichloride is isolated from its mixture with a -phenylethylene-b -chlorhydrin, obtained when hypochlorous acid is added to styrol, by dissolving the mixture in an organic solvent non-miscible with water, treating the solution, in the presence or absence of water, with an alkali metal oxide or hydroxide without allowing it to boil, and finally fractionating the product after freeing it from alkali. When one of the components of the starting mixture is present in excess, it may itself function as the solvent. The a -phenylethylene-b -chlorhydrin becomes converted into phenylethylene oxide which can readily be distilled away. Solvents mentioned are benzene, tetrachlorethane, trichlorethane, chlorobenzene, ether, and benzyl alcohol. Examples are given. It is stated that a -phenylethylene-a b -dichloride is converted into a -phenyl-b -chlorethylene when boiled with aqueous or alcoholic alkali in the absence of a water-insoluble organic solvent.
