[Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iii).] Planing.-The apparatus described in the parent Specification for machining Pilger rolls and the like is modified by arranging the segmental cams 18 to move the tool 2a positively in the outward direction while additional cams are arranged to effect the inward movements of the tool as the inclined portions ao, ob of the roll groove are cut. In Fig. 3, the additional return cams 50 are inwardly urged by adjustable springs 51 and coact with a roller 52 mounted on the tool holder. During the outward movement of the tool holder while the tool cuts along the line ao, the tension of the spring 51 is increased, the tension being relieved as the tool holder is moved inwardly during the cut along the line ob. In a modification, Fig. 5, the spindle 28 which controls the cutting radius of the tool is geared to a pair of screwed spindles 59 working in nuts 60 connected by levers 61, 62 to blocks 63 connected to one end of the springs 66 of the return cams 65. In a further modification, Fig. 6, fixed cams 67 mounted in guides 53 are provided with nuts 75 coacting with screwed spindles 74 driven through gearing from the spindle 28. The position of the cams thus varies with the radial position of the tool holder and is always such that the tool is moved, while cutting the roll sides, in a direction tangential to the circular tool movement. In some cases the cams may be carried on the tool holder and their coacting rollers on the machine frame.
