[Class 58.] The straw and straw particles from the thrashing discs 5 of an axial thrashing-machine or an axial thrashing and straw - reducing machine pass into a casing 23a in which they are exposed to the action of revolving tossing beaters, the casing being provided in its upper part with lateral recesses 51, 52, fitted with sieves through which sieves any grain still remaining in the materials thrown into the recesses by the beaters, passes. The casing 23a is divided by partitions 56, 63 into compartments communicating by central apertures, the arrangement and number of the beating members 49, 57, 64 in the compartments differing. The partitions do not extend into the recesses 51, 52 which are provided with inwardly and longitudinally inclined sieves and directing plates 53, 54, 55. Air blasts through passages 87 or agitators 89 may be provided to facilitate the separation of the grain which falls through the lower sieves 53. The rate of feed of the materials through the casing is controlled by exchangeable segmental strips 48 fitted around an annular passage leading from the thrashing and straw - reducing chambers. The beating members or rakes in the last compartment 43 are inclined forwardly with respect to the direction of rotation to feed the straw into a blower chamber. The chamber 44 may taper towards the blower chamber or be provided with an inset so that its upper edge adjoins the recesses 51, 52, the straw outlet being restricted to a small passage below the shaft 4. The blower chamber is divided into two compartments by a central partition 71 and segments 74 between the vanes 69. Straw from the chamber 44 is discharged from the first compartment of the blower, the second compartment being connected to the recesses 51, 52 to supply the air blast. In a modification, the casing 21a is not divided but is provided with tossing rakes and agitating rakes arranged in alternate order between discs mounted on the shaft 4 ; segmental gaps are provided in the discs for the passage of the straw, the gaps being in staggered relation to the two discs. The separated grain falls to a screw conveyer 92 that carries it to an elevator 100 leading to a winnowing device 101 ; dust is removed from the conveyer through a wide inlet 84 communicating with the blower.
