Abstract

379,947. Rolling. WORTHINGTON, W., 6051, Grafton Street, Pittsburg, U.S.A. Dec. 23, 1931, No. 35569. [Class 83 (iv).] The convex-ended rolls 5 of a mill are backed by complementary rollers 7 which prevent axial movement of the roll by having a double conical bearing 29 for the necks of the rollers 7. Axial adjustment of the rolls is provided by a screw 37 which moves the bearing box 31 of the roller 7. Pass adjustment is provided by worm operated screws 32 which raise or lower the bearing box of the lower backing roller, and also by moving the bearing blocks 15 of the roll shafts 14 by means of worm drive nuts 20, 21 operating rods 17, 18, one of which, 17, may pull up the bearing block 15 while the other presses it down. These may act together or independently. Roller bearings may be provided throughout, the double conical bearings then being replaced by two roller bearings inclined towards each other. 12 represents an extension of the framing which may be in separate parts and then joined together.
