[Class 17 (i).] Laying and levelling, preparing boots and shoes for.-The overlasted portion of a shoe upper is incised or perforated to indicate the boundary of the subsequent roughing for the attachment of the sole by adhesive. The perforations extend through the upper and any lining to the adjacent face of the insole, which face may have been previously coated with adhesive. The marking may be effected during the lasting operation. For this purpose, the lasting or stapling machine described in Specification 294,640, [Class 17 (i), Boots and shoes, Apparatus for making &c.], is modified as shown in Fig. 3 for simultaneously stapling and punching perforations 7, which are staggered with the staples 5. A small tubular punch 55 is secured to a member 53 which is pivoted on a rod 51 on the forward end of a fixed plate 49, and integral with the member 53 is a lug 57 which is struck by a screw 61 when the latch 37 is released to operate the stapling device 19. The member 53 and punch are thus deflected to an extent governed by the screw 61. A light spring is attached to the lug 57 to raise the punch from the work. According to the Provisional Specification, the depth of the perforations is determined by a collar adjustable on the punch and contacting with the overlasted margin of the upper.
