Abstract
Liquid or gaseous carbon compounds, including oils and distillation products but excluding acetylene, are purified, reduced or desulphurized by passage at raised temperature, e.g. 220-300 DEG C. with or without hydrogen over freshly reduced granulated iron ore, any sulphuretted hydrogen present having first been removed. Porous oolitic iron ore (minette) is preferably used and is reduced by means of hydrogen, hydrogen-containing gas, carbon monoxide or carbon. After the treatment of oils, e.g. benzine, petroleum, coal oils, in the absence of hydrogen, the compounds may be passed with hydrogen over a further quantity of ore. Other ores such as of copper or nickel may be mixed with the iron ore. The reduction or hydrogenation of oxygen-containing carbon compounds, naphthalene, and acidic substances such as phenols or cresols, and the production of ammonia from hydrogen cyanide are mentioned. Specifications 286,255, [Class 91, Oils &c.], and 339,276, [Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.], are referred to.ALSO:Liquid or gaseous carbon compounds, including oils and distillation products but excluding acetylene, are purified, reduced or desulphurized by passage at raised temperature, e.g. 220-300 DEG C., with or without hydrogen over freshly reduced granulated iron ore, any sulphuretted hydrogen present having first been removed. Porous oolitic iron ore (minette) is preferably used and is reduced by means of hydrogen, hydrogen-containing gas, carbon monoxide or carbon. Examples of the treatment of coal gas, water gas, gases from brown coal and shale, for removal of combined sulphur and increasing the yield of liquid hydrocarbons are described. Other ores such as of copper or nickel may be mixed with the iron ore. The reduction or hydrogenation of oxygen-containing carbon compounds, naphthalene, and acidic substances such as phenols or cresols, and the production of ammonia from hydrogen cyanide are mentioned.
