Abstract

378,358. Ventilating buildings; shaft tops. RUTTER, J. M., Guildford, Ditchling Road, Brighton. March 30, 1932, No. 9131. [Classes 25 and 137.] A means for ventilating a room comprises a passage leading from the upper end of the room into a closed or substantially closed space above the room in which air can circulate, the upper end of the air passage being provided with means for preventing downdraught into the room. As shown, Fig. 1, an uptake pipe 3 arranged above the ceiling of a room 1 provides communication between the room and the loft 2. Downdraught is prevented by a rotatable cowl 4. The uptake and cowl may be of wood, wood-pulp, asbestos composition, papier machÚ, or metal. An inlet ventilator 12 is provided in a wall of the room. The cowl 4 may be dispensed with and the uptake pipe formed with a plurality of superposed louvres 6, Fig. 2, and provided at the top with a spaced plate 8. In another modification, the uptake is not perforated and is provided with a domed cover the lower edge of which extends beneath the upper end of the uptake.
