Abstract

378,286. Loud-speakers. KIRKE, H. L., 53, Rodenhurst Road, Clapham Park, London, HOWE, A. B., Shaldon, Hill View Road, Hatch End, Middlesex, and BARRETT, A. E., 62, Lessar Avenue, Clapham Common, London. Nov. 27, 1931, No. 32973. [Class 40 (iv).] A loud-speaker comprises a diaphragm having associated with one side thereof an air chamber flaring from the diaphragm outwards and wholly or partially bounded by sound-damping material of such nature and thickness that a large proportion of the sound energy of lower frequencies falling upon this material is absorbed thereby. The material is of a fibrous nature, such as slag wool or rock wool and is retained in position by material offering little obstruction to the passage of sound waves, such as wire mesh covered with thick muslin. The thickness of the material in the neighbourhood of the diaphragm is preferably of the same order as the diameter of the diaphragm. Fig. 2 shows a construction of loud-speaker having a diaphragm 1 mounted in an aperture in the front wall 2 of a box the back of which is left open and the inside of which is lined with a thick layer of damping material 3. The crosssectional area of the air chamber thus formed increases approximately logarithmically from the diaphragm outwards. If desired, the back of the air chamber may be covered either with a thick layer of damping material or by a thin fabric. A flared air column may also be provided on both sides of the diaphragm, the rates of flare and the inlet areas of the two chambers being the same or different. According to a further modification, Fig. 3, the top and bottom of the box are omitted as well as the back and the two sides are lined with damping material to form a trough-shaped air chamber. The thickness of the damping material at the front wall 2 may be made greatest in the neighbourhood of the diaphragm as indicated by the dotted lines. In this arrangement, the height of the structure is preferably made considerably greater than its breadth and the sides thereof may be hinged to the front.
