Abstract
377,320. Electric brakes. BARKER, G. G., 59, Chancery Lane, London. -(Bendix Brake Co.; 401, North Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana, U.S.A.) April 30, 1931, No. 12754. [Class 103 (i).] Brake mechanism under the control of a single pedal wherein the power is taken from an electric power device comprises a friction clutch which in part co-operates with the powerdevice to couple this device to the brakes and in part transmits pressure directly from the pedal to the brakes. The degree of functional coupling of the power device to the brakes is proportional to the excess of displacement of a pedal lever over the displacement of a brake. applying lever. The brake pedal is connected to a lever 82 and the brakes to a lever 78, these levers being respectively mounted on concentric sleeves 26, 24 carrying flanges 76, 74. The ends of a spring 64 of rectangular wire rest against lugs on the flanges 76, 74 so that when the flanges are moved relatively by operation of the brake pedal the spring is expanded against a cylinder 62 integral with a ring gear 42 driven by the electric motor through reduction gearing and the levers are rotated to apply the brakes. The reduction gearing comprises a driving pinion 32 keyed to the shaft 12 of the motor, planet pinions 36 mounted in a-freely revolving carrier 44, 48 and two internal ring gears 40, 42 having their rotative bearing in the housing 22. Ring gear 40 is held against rotation by a spring ratchet 116. Ring gear 42 has two more teeth than ring gear 40 and the gearing is proportioned so that seventyfour turns of the motor turn the ring gear 42 once. The motor 10 is of the low voltage bar wound type receiving current from a storage battery. The armature is supported in overhung fashion on the shaft 12 which is mounted in bearings 14, 16. The endplate 44 of the carrier revolves on an extension of the bearing 14 and is tied by integral arms to the endplate 48 which has a hub revolving in the sleeve 24. The spring ratchet 116 comprises a spring of rectangular wire wound in the opposite direction to the spring 64 and fitting more snugly into its cylinders 112, 114. The cylinder 112 is fixed to the housing 22 and the cylinder 114 is an extension of the ring gear 40. This spring ratchet allows the ring gear 40 to rotate in the opposite direction and permits the brakes to be applied by manual means alone. A switch on the pedal is operated by pressure on the pedal tread to supply current to the motor.
