Abstract
376,194. Sewing-machines. UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION, Paterson, New Jersey, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Ashworth, F. ; Wenham, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) Jan. 23, 1932, No. 2102. Convention date, March 9, 1931. [Class 112.] Work supports ; presser feet.-A curved needle, awlfeed lock-stitch sewing-machine of the kind described in Specification 23478/10, [Class 112, Sewing &c.], has its work support and presser foot modified to adapt it to stitching the uppers of moccasins. The work support comprises two angularly disposed faces with a slot for passage of the needle, and the presser is wedge-shaped to fit into the angular space between the faces. The needle 2, feed awl 4, loop spreader and rotary hook for passing the needle loops round the bobbin are as described in the abovementioned Specification. The work support 24 is bolted to the carrier 28 secured to a bracket on the machine frame. The support has a pair of angularly disposed work-supporting faces 32, 34 for holding the top-piece 18 and ramp 20 in required relationship for stitching. The support is recessed at 36, Fig. 3, to allow passage of the needle and awl. The presser foot 38 is wedge-shaped to fit into the angle formed by the work-supporting faces and is cut away at its apex to allow passage of the needle and awl. Only a small part of its pointed edge remains, as shown in Fig. 3. This enables the work to be readily manipulated round corners. The mechanism for operating the horn 40 carrying the presser foot to lock it in work-engaging position during the passage of the needle and for retracting it during the awl-feeding movement is the same as described in the above-mentioned Specification.
