Abstract

375,356. Stapling continuous filaments. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd., 22, Hanover Square, London, and TAYLOR, W. I., of British Celanese, Spondon, near Derby. March 24, 1931, No. 8990. [Class 120 (iii).] In the production of staple fibre from continuous filaments, such as natural silk or artificial silk of cellulose acetate or other cellulose derivatives or viscose or other reconstituted cellulose, the filaments are fed to a cutting-device comprising a fixed blade and a coacting moving blade and are traversed along the length thereof. The cutting-device may comprise a rotary blade or cylinder, and the fibres are removed by suction means which may also feed the filaments, or the feeding may be effected by an ejector device. The stapling may proceed continuously with the production of the artificial filaments which are passed around a feed roller 10, or between feed rollers, to an ejector device 11 or a simple guide reciprocated slowly above rotary blades 16 co-operating with a fixed blade, the fibres being drawn by suction into a storage receptacle. To counteract the tendency of the filaments to whip due to the fan action of the rotary blades, adjustable shuttered perforations may be provided in the cover 13 towards one end of the blades.
