Abstract

375,153. Automatic circuit-breakers; air-break switches. SOUTHERN STATES EQUIPMENT CO., Birmingham, Alabama, U.S.A. Sept. 26, 1931, No. 26879. Convention date, Nov. 26, 1930. [Class 38 (v).] A circuit-breaker comprises an insulating tube 8, within which is located a fuse-wire, the tube being pivoted at its lower end and held by a combined contact and latch-member 11. On overload, the fuse-wire ruptures, allowing the end 14 of the latch 11 to which it is attached to move upwards, whereupon the other end of the latch becomes disengaged from a member 16, and the tube swings downwards, its initial motion being assisted by the resiliency of brush-contacts 18, 19 which normally engage a terminal member 9 and the contact 11. A semicircular trunnion 9a and a slotted bearing 4a allow removal of the tube when it has swung downwards, a switch-stick 23 being used for this purpose and being engaged with a ring 27 on the tube. The member 16 is pivoted at 24 to allow of closure of the circuit-breaker, and also to permit of opening by lifting the member 16 clear of the contact 11 by means of the switch-stick. A suitable fuse element consists of flexible conductors 29, 30, Fig. 7, high resistance conductors 31, 32 and a sleeve 33 soldered thereto with a low-melting solder.
