Abstract

374,503. Stereotype. LINOTYPE & MACHINERY, Ltd., 9, Kingsway, London, GERRARD, W., Brantwood, Brook Lane, Timperley, and HARRIS, W., 46, Navigation Road, Altrincham, both in Cheshire. March 12, 1931, No. 7592. [Class 100 (ii).] In a stereotype casting machine of the kind having a convex core 1 co-operating with a vertical concave back 2 and resting when in casting position on a bottom half ring 2a carried on a pivoted support 17, the support is adapted to be moved rectilinearly before tilting to enable the matrix to remain clamped in the back when the mould is opened. The support 17 is pivoted on a rod 16 provided with rollers 18 running in slots 19a in brackets 19 secured at each side of the back, and rollers 45 carried by the inner part of the support run on tracks 44 on the back. Pivoted on the rod 16 are arms having 15 slotted ends engaged by the ends of arms 14 fixed to a rock shaft 10 which is connected by members 12, 13, 11 with a rock shaft 9 under the control of a treadle 8. In normal position the ends of the arms 14 engage the inner ends of the slots in the arms 15 so that depression of the treadle 8 causes the core to move outwardly guided by the rollers 18 in the slots 19a and rollers 3 running on tracks 5. During the initial movement of the treadle, a pin carried by the bifurcated end of an arm 22 on the shaft 9 runs in a slot in a link 21 pivoted to the support 17, but when the rectilinear movement of the core is completed, the pin engages the end of the slot and further depression of the treadle causes the support and core to be tilted about the rod 16, the movement of the arms 14 with the shaft 10 being permitted by the slots in the arms 15. The shaft 9 carries an arm 47 having a pin-and-slot connection with a link 46 connected to a lever 29 on a shaft 28 and this lever, when the depression of the treadle is complete, closes the ends of cam races 26 and ensures the correct engagement therewith of rollers 25 carried by brackets on each side of the core, the races and rollers serving to guide the core in its movement to horizontal position. A pivoted catch 48 engages a stop on the lever 29 to retain it in raised position. When the core is turned to horizontal position, the' support returns by gravity, and the treadle and shafts 9, 10 are returned by the action of the spring 12a, the pin-and-slot connections between the levers permitting this action. To close the mould, the core must first be returned to vertical position, in which position one of a pair of rollers 51 on the core engages a pivoted catch 53, normally held in raised position by a spring 54. The catch prevents the movement of levers 39 unless the core is in vertical position. During its movement to vertical position, a roller 62 on the core engages an arm 61 on the support 17 and tilts the support upward to meet the core and ensure that the core and support are properly in engagement. The levers 39 are secured to a rock-shaft 38 under the control of a treadle 37, and on actuation of the treadle, a cam surface on one of the levers 39 raises the catch 48 and permits the lever 29 to face and open the end of the cam race 26. The levers 39 then engage the rollers 51 and move the core to closed position. In a modification, the shaft 38 or a shaft working in unison therewith is provided with upstanding arms connected by slotted links to the rod 16 to assist the closing movement. The shaft is also connected with hooked arms adapted to engage projections on the upper end of the core to move the upper part of the core with the support 17, the hooked arms being held out of operative position during the outward movement of the core. According to the Provisional Specification, the core is locked in operative position by toggle devices operating sliding jaws on the core to engage brackets on the back.
