Abstract
373,612. Grinding crank shafts &c. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(Norton Co. ; New Bond Street, Worcester, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) Dec. 19, 1930, No. 38367. [Class 60.] A machine for grinding crank shafts &c. is provided with a steady rest and gauging and wheel-feed and traversecontrolling means, the steady rest and the gauge being movable to a position away from the work for removal &c. of this and movable to an operative position, in which it is locked during grinding ; an interlocking mechanism also is provided for preventing traverse of the work whilst the steady rest is in the operative position, and means for supplying cooling fluid also may be operable by the movement of the steady rest. The machine consists of a base 11 on which is movable a work-table 12 and a wheel slide 14 carrying a grinding-wheel 15 surrounded by a guard 16 secured to the slide. A steady rest 20 is pivotally carried by an arm 23 pivoted to an arm 21, which is pivoted at 22 to the guard 16 and is counterbalanced by a spring 30. The rest is provided with a handle 41 pivoted to the rest at 42 serving to raise and lower the rest and, by means of a second lever arm 48 and a link 47, to move a member 44 to clamp the rest to the bed. The rest carries shoes 50, 51 to engage the work 75, the shoe 50 being carried by a member 52 adjustable in the rest 20 by a screw 70 and the shoe 51 being carried by a lever 56 having a pivot stud 57 movable in a slot 58 in the rest. The lever 56 has teeth 63 thereon engaging teeth 61 on a bell-crank lever 62, the other arm of which has teeth 64 engaging a rack 65 which moves the member 52, so that movement of the lever 56 causes both of the shoes simultaneously to approach or recede from the work. Movement of the handle 41 to lift the rest releases a cam 76 and allows the shoe 51 to fall from the work 75 and the shoe 50 also to move therefrom, whilst to move the shoes into operative contact with the work, a sleeve 82 is provided pivoted at 83 to the rest and carrying a spring-pressed collar engaging beneath the lever 56 and a cam follower 80, adjustable on the sleeve by a sleeve 91 screwing thereon, engaging a cam surface 85 on the lever 56. The gauge consists of an anvil 104 carrying adjustable screws 105, 106 to engage the work and a plunger 107 engaging the work and movable in a sleeve 108 to operate an indicator 109. The sleeve 108 is adjustably carried, through members 102, 110 .. 116, by an arm 100 fixed to the rest, and the sleeve 108 is movable by a rod 120 which carries collars 126, 127 and passes through a sleeve on a rod 125 slidable in the sleeve 82, so that the gauge may move into and out of operative position with the steady rest. Cooling fluid is supplied to a spout 134 from pipes 130, 132, 133 through a valve 131 operated by a rod 137, and the rod may be moved, by movements of the rest, by an arm 140 carrying a pin 141 adapted to engage a slot 142 in a member 143 slidablv mounted on the rod 137 to move between adjustable collars 144, 145. The grinding-wheel slide 14 is movable to and from the work by a piston 151 in a cylinder 150 under control of a valve 155 movable bv a lever 159, which may be set to cause a feed of the wheel, a stoppage of the wheel feed, or a withdrawal of the wheel from the work. The valve is also operable by a knob 167 on the rod 125, which rod extends downwardly and carries a shoe 168 contacting with a spring-pressed shoe 169 carrying a member 171 adapted to move a bell-crank lever 173, 174 connected to the stem 158 of the valve, whereby the valve may be set either in neutral position or to retract the wheel from the work. The work-table 12 is traversed by a piston 181 in a cylinder 180 under control of a reversing-valve 184 moved by a lever 189, and the valve is interlocked with the steady rest so that no movement of the table is possible when the rest is in the operative position, the valve 184 being then locked in the neutral position by means of a lever 200 connected bv a link 203 with the lever 189 and provided with a yoke 205. A spring-pressed plunger 206 mounted in the machine bed is movable to engage the yoke, when the steady rest is clamped to the bed, by a part 207 of the member 171., and is released when the steady rest is lifted.
