Abstract
373,528. Controlling rail motor coaches and locomotives. BALDIE, J., Kenilworth, Ratten Lane, Hutton, near Preston, Lancashire, STEAD, J. H., 13, South Place, ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., 28, Kingsway, and DREWRY CAR CO., Ltd., 13, South Place, all in London. Oct. 16, 1931, No. 28790. [Class 79 (v).] Apparatus mounted on a bogie of a rail motor coach, locomotive or the like is controlled from a driver's position on the main frame by means comprising an endless-chain system 7, 8 or 9, 10 mounted on the frame and driven by a driver's handle, a lever 13 or 19 pivotally mounted on the frame and connected to the chain system, a control lever 14 or 22 mounted on the bogie, and a coupling between the levers which allows the bogie to oscillate about its centre C without causing any relative angular movement of the levers. In the construction shown the levers 13, 14 are connected by an adjustable link 17, the lever 14 being connected by a rod 18 to the throttle of the internal-combustion engine (not shown) mounted on the bogie. The shafts of the levers 19, 22 are connected by universal joints 20a, 21a to telescopic shaft parts 20, 21 splined together, the lever 22 being connected by a link 23 to the change-speed gear. The locomotive or coach is provided with a control panel 1a, 1b at each end, these panels having handles 2a, 2b fixed thereto for operating pneumatic clutch valves, and removable handles 24, 25 for operating the change-speed gear and throttle respectively. The handles 24, 25 can be respectively placed on spindles 3a, 3b and 4a, 4b, the spindles 3a, 3b being connected together by the chain system 7, 8 and the spindles 4a, 4b by the system 9, 10. Each chain system comprises short lengths of chain near the spindles and idle pulleys 11, these lengths being connected together by rods 29 provided with adjustable turnbuckles 12. The handles 24, 25 are provided with lugs 24a, 25a which can pass through corresponding slots 27, 28 in the control panels only when the handles are in the zero or neutral position. The handle 24 has a collar on its boss which is adapted to be engaged by a flat sector 31 on the clutch valve handle 2a so that the handle 24 cannot be removed unless the handle 2a is in the clutch released position. A reversing valve spindle 5a has a slot 27 corresponding to the slot for the spindle 3a so that the handle 24 can be used to operate the reversing valve. The lug 25a on the handle 25 is longer than that on the handle 24 so that the handle 25 cannot be used for the reversing valve. Thus before the reversing valve can be operated the handle 25 must be moved from spindle 3a to 5a and therefore the gear must be in neutral and the clutch released.
