Abstract

372,707. Lubricating axle bearings. PEYINGHAUS, W., Egge, near Volmarstein, Ruhr, Germany. Jan. 1, 1932, No. 48. Convention date, Jan. 2, 1931. [Class 12 (iii).] In an axle-box lubricated by an internallytoothed ring e suspended on a toothed disc c secured to the end of the axle a, the crowns of the teeth of the disc are formed as knife edges d and the gaps between the teeth of the ring as notches f. The ring has projecting lugs h which overhang the end of the brass, and the outer surface of the ring tapers towards the brass and is formed with grooves i, Fig. 4, which converge at the ends of the lugs. At low speeds, oil carried up by the ring flows through the grooves and off the ends of the lugs h into a recess in the brass, while at high speeds oil is thrown from a tapering flange k of the ring on to the casing walls, whence it runs into the recess in the brass. Removable ribs l, Fig. 4, or rollers arranged in the sides of the upper part of the box contact with the outer surface of the ring if the latter swings, so as to limit such swinging. They also serve as scrapers.
