[Class 110 (iii).] In a power plant, steam generated in the cooling jacket 24 surrounding the cylinder 2 and the exhaust pipes 21 of a double-acting internal-combustion engine is used in a separate cylinder 1 having a piston 5 connected to the crank shaft 13 by two connecting-rods 12. The waste heat may be sufficient to superheat the steam. The main pistons 4, 5 are connected by a rod 6. Within the upper (explosion) piston 4 is arranged a piston valve 10 which controls the supply of compressed air required for scavenging and combustion. The valve is carried by a sleeve 9 which is actuated by a connecting-rod 14 mounted on an eccentric on the main shaft. The passages in the piston are formed so that when air is delivered to the combustion chamber, it enters with a swirling movement, and when it is delivered to the discharge port 20 for scavenging, it cools the sides of the piston. Recesses are formed in the piston to trap oil carried by the air from the crank case. A modified arrangement of water jacket is described. Specification 374,578 is referred to.
