Abstract
Lime is slaked by treatment with mineral acids such as hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, with the addition, if desired, of various salts, in a closed chamber to conserve the heat of reaction. Salts which may be used are chlorides, chlorates, hypochlorites, sulphates, persulphates, sulphites, hydrosulphites, sulphides, or permanganates. The formation of cementitious compounds is enhanced by the presence of silica or silicates, which, if not present, may be added, e.g. as aluminium hydrosilicate in the form of zeolites. Hydraulic limes may be so treated, and instead of treating the whole mass, a portion may be treated with a larger quantity of reagent and added to the untreated lime. A suitable mixture is 100 kgm. of common lime in pieces, 40 kgm. of water, 6 to 10 kgm. of mineral acid, and 0,5 to 1 kgm. of the additional substances specified.ALSO:Lime, quick or hydrated, for use as a mortar constituent, is treated with mineral acids with the addition, if desired, of various salts, in a closed chamber to conserve the heat of reaction.
