Abstract
371,567. Machines for making wire ropes and cables. CALLENDER'S CABLE & CONSTRUCTION CO., Ltd., Hamilton House, Victoria Embankment, London, and HILL, H., of Callender's Cable & Construction Co., Belvedere, Kent. March 27,1931, No. 9353. [Class 109.] A cage-type stranding machine comprises three or more axially aligned rotatable cages containing the supply bobbins, and, located in front of the final cage, a corresponding number of die plates 74, 71, 59 and a single closing die arrangement 76. Each of the die plates is rotated at the same speed as the cage from which its wires are drawn, the wires from the earlier cages being guided through the succeeding cages by nests 13, 43 of tubes. The tubes are rotatably mounted, preferably upon ball bearings, within the hollow mandrels 34 of the succeeding cages. The cross sectional form of the cable may be other than circular, dependent upon the shape of the closing die, which may be of the form described in Specification 354,927. By arranging the controlling gear operating the motor driving the lay shaft, from which the cages are driven, near the closing die a single operator can supervise the running of the complete machine.
