Abstract
371,533. Cylinders ; regulating; starting. VANNI, P. G., 11, Via Rugabella, Milan, Italy. Feb. 28, 1931, No. 6367. Convention date, March 3, 1930. [Classes 7 (ii), 7 (v), and 7 (vi).] In a two-stroke engine cylinder having exhaust and inlet ports at opposite ends, the scavenging air or mixture enters during each cycle first radially and then tangentially so that the cylinder is scavenged by an axial column which is succeeded by a whirling annular column. Whirling is effected by baffles 31 in a passage 9 supplied with compressed air or mixture and arranged around terminal ports 3, the initial radial flow being produced by the sudden fall in pressure when the ports 3, which are thin, are first uncovered by the piston. One or more of the baffles may be pivoted, as at 32, in the passage 9, adjustment being either fixed, by hand, or periodic, by an engine driven cam, or by airflow, the baffle being eccentrically mounted or spring loaded. The baffles may be mounted on transverse walls forming a chamber which can be moved axially within the passage 9, for regulating, and facilitating starting, by reducing the whirling of the air, as described in Specification 372,010. The area of the inlet ports 20, 201 is less than the total area of the ports 3.
