Abstract

Metal articles having different compositions in different parts of their mass are made by arranging two or more substances, one at least of which is a metal which has been obtained by the decomposition of the corresponding carbonyl, in finely divided form in a number of layers differing from each other in composition, sintering the whole by the action of heat alone, and thereafter subjecting the sintered product to mechanical compression which may be the usual pressing, rolling, forging, or the like for the production of plates, sheets, billets, rods, tubes, wires, &c. Elements such as silicon, carbon, and arsenic, and oxides or other reducible compounds, may be constituents of the mixtures. Different powders may be charged in layers into moulds and then consolidated, or single layers may be first consolidated by heat into porous solid pieces which are afterwards further consolidated and united with each other or with layers of other powders. Metal articles may be made the surface of which has a composition wholly or partly different from the core; or different parts of the surface may be of different compositions. The products may be converted into articles of substantially uniform composition by further heat treatment, alloys of iron with silicon, aluminium, chromium, nickel, or manganese for example being so obtained; transformer sheets may be obtained from iron powder and silicon powder.
