Abstract

369,702. Vehicle brakes. CADNEY, W., No. 1 Stores Depot, Royal Air Force, Kidbrooke, London. Jan. 23, 1931, No. 2227. [Class 103 (i).] A device whereby the fall of the tow-bar of a trailer vehicle in the event of its becoming detached from the tractor effects the application of the brakes comprises in one construction a lever 3 pivoted at 4 to the trailer forecarriage for engagement with an adjustable screwed rod 7 on the tow-bar 5. The brake operating connections comprise a rod 9 slidable in the perch pin 10, a cranked lever 11 and connecting- rod 13. For manual operation of the brakes a hand or foot lever may be arranged to engage a collar on the rod 13. The piston of a vacuum cylinder mounted on the trailer and adapted to be exhausted by the engine on the tractor may also be connected to the rod 13. In the case of a trailer provided with Ackerman steering, with the tow-bar mounted to swing on the front axle or framework of the vehicle, the brake operating connections may comprise a cable attached to the tow-bar forward of its horizontal pivot and passing through a guide disposed in vertical alignment with the steering axis of the tow-bar. The cable is connected by a cross-bar to a pair of cables each connected to a wheel brake on one side of the vehicle.
