Abstract

369,511. Gauging-apparatus. ZEISS, C., [Firm of], Carl-Zeiss-Strasse, Jena, Germany. Aug. 13, 1931, No. 22847. Convention date, Aug. 18, 1930. [Class 106 (ii).] A method and means for measuring diameters comprises illuminating tangentially the ends of the diameter by light pencils and measuring the distance between interference bands at each end such distance being diminished by the calculated distance of the bands from the surfaces. A table 1 mounted on four legs 2 is provided with a slide 4 displaceable by a spindle 5, the slide carrying two measuring microscopes 9, 10 with axes at rightangles to the direction of movement of the slide. A stepped supporting plate 16 connects the legs 2 on which is provided a glass scale 17 the lower part of the plate 16 being broadened to take supports 20 provided with centres 21 on which the cylinder 19 or other object is mounted. A lower slide 25 moving parallel to the slide 4 carries a collimator 30 provided with a lamp 32 and diaphragm 33 having a fine slit parallel to the line of the centres 21 and passing through the focus of a lens 34. By turning the wheel 28 the light pencil is adjusted tangentially to one side of the cylinder 19. The microscope 9 which has relatively large magnification is now adjusted to image sharply the horizontal plane containing the axis of the centres and so that the illuminated edge of the cylinder 19 lies in the centre of the field. The microscope 10 is adjusted so that a division of the scale 17 is sharply imaged between the double threads of the microscope. In the microscope 9 there is now visible interference bands parallel to the edge of the cylinder. The reticule is adjusted to one band and the values read on the scale 17 and in the eyepiece micrometer 13. This is now repeated for the other edge of the cylinder. The difference between the readings gives the distance between the interference bands which distance to give the required diameter is diminished by the sum of the distances of the bands from the surface of the cylinder obtained by calculation. In another form the microscopes are mounted in the top plate but are interchanged and the scale 17 and supports 20 mounted on a slide the collimator being fixed.
