369,135. Ornamenting pottery; glazes. COMES, A., 14, Bahnhofstrasse, B³ckeburg, Germany. Aug. 6, 1931, No. 22289. [ A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug. 7, 1931.] [Class 87 (i).] " Terra sigillata " coatings are produced by converting a " fat," red-burning, ferruginous clay, such as that of Rheinzabern or Saverne (Lower Rhine) or Jockgrim, into a slip with alkali, such as soda, which is allowed to stand and is repeatedly decanted for 4 to 5 weeks, when no further precipitate is thrown down, after which it is allowed to stand for a further 14 days, when the clay swells and the slip becomes gelatinous. The coated ware is fired in an oxidizing atmosphere in a muffle oven at 1000‹ Celsius. The red-tinted ware may be turned grey or black by steaming at the completion of the firing.
